Pregnacare Multi-Nutrient (Multi-Nutrient) Tablets with 400μg of Folic Acid Pregnacare tablets contain a careful composition of 19 nutrients that are important for both mother and baby. Pregnacare has been carefully developed by experts so that all the ingredients are at safe levels for pregnancy and are moderate, not excessive. These include vitamin B12, and vitamin D and folic acid at the level recommended for the unborn baby. Folic acid supplementation increases maternal folic acid † levels. Low levels of maternal folic acid are a risk factor for the development of a defective neural tube in the developing fetus.
Omega-3 capsules with 300mg DHA The capsules contain highly purified fish oil, which is a rich source of important Omega-3 fatty acids DHA and EPA. DHA is especially important during pregnancy, as it contributes to the normal development of the brain and eyes of the fetus **. One Pregnacare Omega-3 capsule daily provides 300 mg of DHA, the exact level recommended by international lipid nutrition experts*** for pregnant and lactating women, and 60 mg of EPA. Pregnacare Plus Omega-3 capsule contains the purest pharmaceutical grade fish oil, certified for its sustainability by Friend of the Sea. The capsules do not contain fish oil derived from tuna, shark, herring or swordfish. The UK FSA advises pregnant women and women planning to become pregnant to avoid sources of shark, herring and swordfish and not to eat large amounts of tuna.

Vitamin D in pregnancy

The Importance of Omega-3 Fatty Acids
Adults can receive DHA and EPA indirectly through the conversion of the basic fatty acid alpha-linoleic acid (ALA) present in vegetable oils such as flaxseed, but this procedure is not recommended as effective. Fish oils provide a much more reliable, direct source of DHA and EPA. The fetus and infant in early life should receive these fatty acids directly as they have limited ability to convert essential fatty acids to more active long chain fatty acids such as DHA.

Brain and eye development
DHA is the predominant fatty acid in the central nervous system, located in the structural walls of brain cells. Surprisingly, the fetal brain is made up of 60% fat, of which 40% is DHA. There is a large increase in DHA intake by the fetus and a corresponding increase in brain DHA content during the last trimester of pregnancy and the first postpartum months. 1,2 At birth, the weight of a baby's brain is about 70% of the weight of an adult's brain. 15% of brain development occurs in infancy and the preschool years.

DHA is important throughout this growth period.3 DHA is found in even higher concentrations in the retina, where it contributes up to 60% of the fatty acid content.
